TOOLS

• maple clay tools •

I like to sculpt clay as a hobby. I have a few dentistry tools, but I’ve always wanted to expand my sculpting toolbox. Sure, I could just buy some tools from the local arts and craft store, but I have hands, so it’ll be a shame not to use it to make my own custom sculpting tools.

So I did.
Seven ergonomic clay tools made with maple wood and finished with mineral oil.
Tools are made from scrap maple. The forms are based roughly on some existing designs found in local arts and craft stores. The rough forms are cut using a bandsaw, formed using a belt sander, and finished with tung oil. Overall, a simple but useful one-day project.
Seven tools at a dramatic angle.
Dramatic and definitely not deliberate positioning of tools on an industrial grey concrete floor.
